Breathe Life 03:43
Breathe a little life into me, warm me with your smile Hold me in your magic spell, I want to be lost for a while Days so full and yet so empty, all that changed when you came near Driving through hurricanes and floods, taking on life without fear Cause you breathe life into me Flying so close to the flame, am I gonna burn? Always picked last for the team, finally it’s my turn -to shine cause I see myself in your eyes and I’m mesmerized by my reflection Naked so exposed, I’ve left my heart without protection Because you breathe life into me So, careful how you handle me I am a raw nerve I could run away from this but what good would that serve I would rather fall and die than stay put on the ground Never know what it is to fly, to never make a sound Because you breathe life into me Flying so close to the flame, am I gonna burn? Always picked last for the team, finally it’s my turn -to shine Cause I see myself in your eyes and I’m mesmerized by my reflection Naked so exposed, I’ve left my heart without protection Because you breathe life into me I see myself in your eyes, all is possible now That you’ve breathed life into me - Laura Fernandez

Hilton Head 03:12
Hilton head is gorgeous this time of year Why don't you come and meet me here A lovely way to spend the holidays Not something you and I would be inclined to do I spend my days dreaming, staring out and seeing I’m watching the waves coming up on the shore I sit here pretending you are here with me What’s the use in pretending what am I waiting for But I can't wait for my man to arrive For my man is not really mine Dreaming is no way for me to spend my time And South Carolina is so far for you to come… Well I told myself you may just come and join me So I’ve been making space here by the sea (while I look out on the sea) But I just keep waiting, the days keep passing Running out of time for you and me But I can't wait for my man to arrive For my man is not really mine Dreaming is no way for me to spend my time And South Carolina is so far for you to come… South Carolina is so far for you to come… South Carolina is so far … to come… - Laura Fernandez

It's not easy to talk to you when the world comes around again and nothing is changed, nothing is changed I know that I have my problems too A lot of them stem from my expectations and when nothing is changed, nothing is changed The branches look black against the setting sky . I can't see beyond the blackest night I need you to lead me home, to tell me I'm welcome and I'm not alone I come to sweep up the damage I come to repair what I broke because nothing was changed. nothing was changed And I look into the loveAnd it's fierce and it blows me down and I'm at your feet again. and nothing is changed The branches look black against the setting sky I can't see beyond the blackest night I need you to lead me home to tell me I'm welcome and I'm not alone You can tell me I'm wrong and I'll admit it too, I get lost and I'll run to you I need you to lead me home, t o tell me I'm welcome and I'm not alone Tell me I'm welcome and I'm not alone - Laura Fernandez

Bare Trees 04:12
The party sounds have all died down Another year has passed The snow has covered up the ground I’ve swept the broken glass The last guest has finally found his way As quiet fades the light Another chair moved into place Another run at night It’s been three days The calls have all but died I sit by the window on my knees Staring at the bare trees Man I almost lost it I came so close to that before I slept So confusing to be wanted And later traded in for common sense The last hope has finally found his way As quiet fades the light Another strand of hair moved into place Another run at night It’s been three days The calls have all but died I sit by the window on my knees Staring at the bare trees I know my numbers don’t add up I know I come with complications I know cause I’ve lived long enough That life’s made up of joy and frustration I know it’s better this way I tell myself its less messy and it’s too late But it’s been 3 days… - Laura Fernandez

Starry Night 02:58
You held my hand, walked me to the water In silent steps while careful not to ruffle The still night air Last night I had a dream I was back there Sitting on the water neath the starry, starry night Just like the painting that made me cry when I was 23 and I had my whole life ahead of me And you I could hear you talking to me But your lips didn’t make a sound And the ripple of the shoreline was all there was Still your words were so profound And I I was careful not to breathe Afraid I would leave the ground The sweeping of the shadows was all there was Still your touch was so profound You held my soul with your breath And I understood the meaning of life and death And in the distance a falling star fades Like in the painting that made me cry when I was 23 And I had my whole life ahead of me That moment will always stay with me

Okay Alright Well I’ve been quiet these days, I have so much to say But I can’t bring myself to say what’s on my mind You got your courage up, a little beer in a cup And you resolved that we should leave this all behind Well okay, alright Don’t have the strength to fight If you don’t love me enough, I can make you stay… Okay alright Well I waited for your call but it didn’t come at all Not a word from you to tell me how you feel Well I’ve been working in a daze I can’t seem to shake this haze right now it seems like none of this is real Well okay, alright Don’t have the strength to fight If you don’t love me enough, I can make you stay… Okay alright I guess we’ll call it a night And in the morning we can go our separate ways…. alright okay So I guess that’s how it stands I’m looking at your hands and I know your touch will leave me in time The snow is falling outside I’m holding on to my pride now that you’ve taken all our dreams and taken your side Are you sure you want it over Is your mind really sober.. Are you sure were ready to let go…. Well okay, alright Don’t have the strength to fight If you don’t love me enough, I can make you stay… Okay alright I guess we’ll call it a night And in the morning we can go our separate ways…. alright okay

Pearls 03:25
We have an understanding There’s a fine line between compromise and betrayal And we walk that line, we choose not to see and we don’t talk about it much But we talk each day and sometimes each night and often we do more than talk And it calms our thirst and it feeds our need and we live as such And the days pass and the nights string together like pearls And the lustre is soft and warm and it casts its hue on our world I make him feel wanted, he makes me feel beautiful and we make each other feel loved And we know what we have is not free and will come with a heavy price and it’ll be paid by me And sometimes someone comes along That you know will turn your world around And you let yourself be redirected That is what I have found

Come Down In Time Elton John and Bernie Taupin In the quiet silent seconds I, I turned off the light switch And I, I came down to meet you in the half light the moon left While a, a cluster of night jars sang some songs out of tune A mantle of bright light shone down from a room Come down in time I still hear her say So clear in my ear like it was today Come down in time was the message she gave Come down in time and I'll meet you half way Well I don't know if I should have heard her as yet But a, a true love like hers is a, a hard love to get And I've, I've walked most all the way and I, I ain't heard her call And I, I'm getting to thinking if she's coming at all Come down in time I still hear her say So clear in my ear like it was today Come down in time was the message she gave Come down in time and I'll meet you half way There are lovers and lovers, and some hold you tight While some leave you counting the stars in the night

It's so cold So cold Coldest winter in 30 years Wind blows brittle, branches split Blanket pulled high around my ears Something about the frozen dark Makes the moon look frozen still Distant echoes crystalize Even love can’t shake this chill So cold So cold Coldest winter in 30 years So cold So cold Blanket pulled up around my ears Lover lying next to me Been together 10 years strong Sleeping soundly book in hand Dreams arranging into song So cold So cold Coldest winter in 30 years So cold So cold Blanket pulled up around my ears Memories past of prairie snows Frozen tears on icy cheeks Ghostly breath veils dim my sight Long tall grasses buried deep So cold So cold Coldest winter in 30 years So cold So cold Blanket pulled up around my ears So cold So cold Coldest winter in 30 years So cold So cold Blanket pulled up around my ears Wrap my leg around his feet Careful not to (stir?) his dreams In the distance barking dogs Guarding winter in their keep So cold…

To Stay 04:47
I don’t want to know where you’ve been But I find myself forming the words And I’ve already guessed, I don’t need to hear you confess I don’t want to hear your evasive reply Every sound feels like a slap Every word lands on a bruise, I feel so tired and confused And this weight is awful heavy Been carrying it around for a while Will it ever, will it ever get lighter If I live in denial Well it’s been days now and the days go by so long And it’s been an effort to keep myself strong I have to find the place where I belong I have to believe that I wasn’t wrong To stay It’s a cold ride home from your place I can feel your lingering kiss And the fuel that drives me is hope, but I feel the pull of the rope

The Killer 04:19
You have struck me down and I will get back up But you know something’s changed you woke me up , you woke me up When I walked beside you, you were blind to me Taking solid steps you walked me into being free But I’m not free and you’re not done You think everything’s all right but you’re the only one Cause I know there’s broken glass lying at my feet And it’s waking up the killer, waking up the killer waking up the killer in me I’m sharpening my knife and I’m gonna use it I want to cut it all up I want to infuse it with a good amount of pain So I can feel it all right Then I’ll put it all to rest I want to turn out the light Cause I’m not free…. Well I’ve been passive I’ve been distracted I’ve let many things go when I should’ve acted But I feel my strength rise up I’m so close to the beast I’m gonna kill it first before it kills me Just one more hit I know I can do it I’m already so close and I can say screw it! screw it! ‘cause when I walked beside you, you were blind to me taking solid steps you walked me into being free There was a time when I believed in trust But you know something’s changed it’s not enough You’ve woken up the killer… 6x - Laura Fernandez

Imagination 03:15
You’re standing close to the edge, but you can’t look down You throw a stone over the side, but you don’t hear a sound, It’s along way down Another step and you fall, but a swan dive would be so much better Nothing to fear at all Make the clouds disappear and it’s beautiful weather Imagination makes the world go round Imagination is our common ground Don’t like the shoes you're standing in, no longer fit your feet Clean out your closet and trade them in You’ve got to own the street, got to move to the beat You’ve got your own drummer now, you can hear that music clear and loud Nothing to hold you down You can dance in this world or you can sit it out Imagination makes the world go round Imagination is our common ground Imagination makes the world go round Imagination is our common ground Creativity, Inspiration Imagination makes the world go round and round and round and round… - Laura Fernandez

about

Laura Fernandez releases her 2020 album Okay, Alright, a vibrant collection of thirteen songs featuring her own compositions, emotionally honest vocals, solid piano playing, with fully realized accompaniment.

On Okay, Alright Laura Fernandez has blended pop, jazz and even classical influences. There are many different styles and grooves, a richness of textures. Each number flows and 'breathes' in its own unique way, always led by and shaped around Laura's fluid, feeling piano, and vocal.

Laura Fernandez is an exceptionally natural songwriter. Her unforced melodies spring from her words, and they emphatically belong with each other. Laura’s voice is warm and rich and expressive, and makes you believe every word she sings.

Laura states, “These songs are a study in emotion, honesty, even pain, a journey through the struggles of intimacy and love to joy, imagination, courage and wonder. There is deep feeling, and there is acceptance. In the end, we make our own choices, we learn from them, and we grow. We experience what it is to be human, and we come to accept who we are. This is Okay, Alright.”

The album features an expert rhythm section (George Koller/bass, Marito Marques/drums). String arrangements (by Tony Quarrington) add lush embellishment on several tracks. Guitar (Noah Zacharin), trumpet (Alexander Brown), even mandolin add to the sonic richness. The album was recorded in high-resolution audio by Grammy winning engineer Peter J. Moore. The album was produced by Laura Fernandez, Howard Gladstone, and Peter J. Moore.

Taking a painterly approach, Laura often describes her songs as self portraits and paintings inspired by her own life captured in a musical medium. An established artist, Laura painted the cover that brilliantly illustrates Okay, Alright.

Laura Fernandez a modern-day renaissance woman. She is an acclaimed painter, award-winning illustrator and designer, and a popular radio host and producer. The nomadic and cosmopolitan Fernandez was born in Madrid, lived in Switzerland as a child, spent her youth in Calgary when her parents migrated there. She has lived much of her adult life in Toronto. While she has always loved music, her primary creative outlet for much of her life has been art. She studied at the same art school in Alberta as Joni Mitchell, also a painter. Laura is highly talented painter of portraits (her father was a painter and architect), she enjoyed a long run of success as one of Canada’s most prominent illustrators. Laura has illustrated numerous children’s books, and her work has been seen internationally on billboards, ads, packing and magazines. {

Music is now Laura’s primary creative passion, and she is bringing her full energy to its pursuit. “Music has become a voyage of self-discovery for me. There are no rules here, and that is exciting and liberating to me. I love the social aspects of making music, and the fact that it is a more direct route to the heart than painting even.”

Her first album, 2003’s The Other Side, is an English language collection of songs described as lyric driven, melodic folk, rock-pop with a groove. It led to a prestigious award at the New York International Independent Music Festival, and performances at Madison Square Garden, the Knitting Factory, The Bitter End, as well as international festivals including TD Toronto Jazz Festival and the International World Music Festival in Cuba.

Her 2010 follow-up album Un Solo Beso is a celebration of Laura’s Spanish roots and Latin influences. Produced by Billy Bryans, the album features some of Canada’s most vibrant and highly acclaimed musicians with arrangements and performances by Hilario Duran, Roberto Linares Brown and Luis Mario Ochoa. The album seamlessly fuses two different approaches, the discipline of pop-folk songwriting and the musically expansive sounds of Latin and jazz styles, creating a work that is musically and lyrically refreshing and compelling.

In 2019 Laura spent five weeks in India performing with Indian musicians and exploring Indo, Latin and Jazz-fusions with Colin D’Cruz (Jazz Goa) and Jazz Junction

Laura Fernandez completed piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She has officially been named to the Steinway Artist roster.
She is the 20th member of this illustrious list from Canada, joining such contemporary artists as Billy Joel, Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr., and past music greats such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter. Steinway & Sons maintains a selective process in naming Steinway Artists – choosing only pianists who demonstrate a love of Steinway pianos and a standard of excellence in their music.

Laura was named one of the 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians in 2015.

Laura Fernandez is producer/host of Café Latino on JazzFM91.

Okay, Alright by Laura Fernandez is available October 2, 2020.

Here is what Laura says about this album:

"Okay, Alright," was a labour of love in more ways than one. I wrote this album over my 20-year career as a songwriter and performer; these were songs I wanted to keep safe; I wanted them to have a home in a collection. Several of the songs were written quite early on and have stayed with me over the years like a living memory, close to my heart. Other songs are newer and have come from a place of understanding. I hoped that the album would feel like a life journey and that you could also feel hope in it.

Yes, these songs are a study in emotion, honesty and pain, and actually, not all the songs are from the same relationship experience. Still, it has been a journey through the struggles of intimacy and love.
There is self-doubt, there is pain, there is longing, but there is also joy, imagination, courage and wonder. There is deep feeling, and there is acceptance. In the end, we make our own choices, we learn from them, and we grow. We experience what it is to be human, and we come to accept who we are. This is Okay, Alright."
